  • Cup-O-T: Wellness and Therapy Services for Rural Norfolk

Cup-O-T: Wellness and Therapy Services – A non-profit mental health service A new mental health support for young people & families in Breckland! Breckland Council and Breckland Youth Advisory Board are jointly funding a £35,000 programme of mental health support - contributing £20,000 and £15,000 respectively. The support will be delivered by Cup-O-T: Wellness and Therapy Services. The programme has been in development and will start offering support in January, until September 2022. The project will offer supp ort to Breckland families with young people aged 11 to 18 (or up to 25 for those who have a disability) who are awaiting treatment from, or on a waiting list for, an NHS mental health service; or those not attending school or at risk of not attending school due to their mental health. The project will run over 12 months and offer support through activity- and skill-based Family Workshops, online Peer Support Sessions and 1-to-1 sessions with mental health professionals. Sessions will be held in Attleborough, Dereham, Swaffham, Thetford and Watton, as well as online. Young people and their families awaiting clinical interventions through CAMHS and Youth NHS mental health services will be prioritised for referral to the project. Further referrals will come through schools, social prescribers and GP services. Cllr Alison Webb, Executive Member for Housing, Health & Communities at Breckland Council, said: "As a council we've committed £1 million over three years through our Inspiring Communities programme to support the wellbeing of our residents and this includes promoting positive mental health. I' m therefore delighted to support this project to offer additional mental health support across our district. We know mental health services are in great demand, so creating this extra capacity will benefit everyone. When organisations were invited to bid to deliver this service, Cup-O-T impressed us all with their passion and knowledge of this area - we're excited about the great programme of support they're going to offer young people and their families." Cup-O-T Wellness and Therapy Services is a not-for-profit mental health service that works to make mental health support accessible at an early stage, especially in rural areas. Catherine Gray, CEO from Cup-O-T, said: "Cup-O-T is an occupational therapy service utilising meaningful and everyday activities to support people, to enhance skills and engage in life in a purposeful way. We believe that support should be interactive and engaging, balancing professional mental h ealth intervention with peer support and shared experience. This project will enable young people and their families to be able to develop the skills to listen, understand, be open and support each other in a way that meets the needs of the family." The Breckland mental health project has been designed by young people for young people. The Breckland Youth Advisory Board (YAB) consulted 4000+ young people to gain feedback on what the project should look like. Ligie from the YAB said: "Waiting lists are too long and our mental health can get worse while we wait; this project will make a huge difference for young people and their families".
